The knowledge base for veterinary medicine, in general, and feline
medicine, in particular, has been expanding exponentially for the last
15 years. This is great for our patients but a real challenge
for veterinary practitioners, especially those who treat more than one
species. Because of this, I have been a strong proponent of
continuing education since I graduated in 1972. I continue to
believe that those who are not moving forward are rapidly falling
behind.
Continuing
education seminars are not always beneficial to the private
practitioner. Like you, I have been to many lectures that had
little application to real-life veterinary practice. Frankly, I have sat
through many lectures that were a waste of my time.
Many
years ago I
was told that my greatest liability
as a speaker was that I was "just a practitioner."
However, most practitioners who attend my seminars consider my
background in private practice to be my greatest asset. Only
those who have been there can understand the realities of private
practice. It is my belief that practitioners who attend my
lectures are fully capable of doing what I do. Therefore, I talk
about what works for me knowing that these same techniques and
procedures will work for you.
My
goal is to cause you to change in the way you practice. If you leave
one of my lectures and go back to your practice with something
new to do for your patients, then I have succeeded.
